Speaking of which

September 4th, 2009 by spinfar

I just noticed my last post was all about jousting and frostfire and stuff. Maybe I should say something about that!

I switched back to a deep fire spec, with a (according to websites) pvp frost spec as the second spec. I’ve been having a tricky time figuring out the frost spec, because it’s so much more dependent on cooldowns and procs and such, and doesn’t have the immediate gratification that dragonsbreath-instantflamestrike-blastwave-instantflamestrike has. I mean, seriously, that shit is awesome.

Did I mention the whole Living Bomb on multiple targets thing? Because that is some hot shit right there too. Holy geez. I have a feeling it isn’t great dps, but what I like to do on trash pulls is dot them all up with LB, then jump in and do the combo mentioned above. If there are any still alive by the time I’m backing up and doing the last flamestrike, I’ll cast whatever. It’s a cute little thing to do, all “you and you and you and you, you’re all gonna blow up one after the other!”  If the mobs have sufficient health, I’ll do a round of scorches before doing the AoE, so theoretically (to my understanding) the damage is increased. If it isn’t, well, shit. Dang.

On jousting: After doing it enough, it gets a lot easier. I know people who burn through fights hella fast, and they make fun of my done-in-a-minute-and-a-bit fights, but, uhh, maybe this is the time to say “to hell with you” and fart in their general direction. Trust me, this is not a thing anyone wants.

Because I enjoy the cannons so much in WG and SotA and such, I mentioned to Teh SO that if I were to join the military, I’d want to work in artillery. My hopes were dashed when he pointed out it’s a great way to go deaf. Poo.

Well, I’m going to finally log in and see what havoc has been wrought in my absence. Probably not much.

Mea Culpa

Dear Me,

I’m sorry I’ve not logged on in a bit. I’ve been reading books (DragonCrown cycle, some archaeology books, etc) and I’ve just felt all blah about things.

Maybe it’s because, as noted by Blizz employees at the recent Blizzcon (or around then), mages aren’t broken so much as there are only a few people who are actually very good at them. If you’re a regular person, they do ok dps, but if you are crazy devoted, they are awesome.

That’s understandable. It makes me sad, though, that other classes can do crazy dps basically by facerolling (e.g., warlocks pre-WotLK). I know, QQ. Sure, fire mages basically use four spells in raid situations, it’s not too bad a cooldown or DoT watch, but it’s like, I’m trying my best here, and the aggro meter sure suggests I’m hurting the motherfucker, but when Recount gets opened guess who is middling. That’s right.

Caveat: I don’t raid or do hella chain dungeons and stuff. I’ve got mostly badge gear, with Naxx and heroic ToC stuff tossed in. I don’t do theorycraft, I just follow directions and do what seems to make sense.

What I’m saying is, playing is hard when everyone is expected to be hella crazy awesome and wearing hella fancy gear (which of course does NOT mean that the person playing is actually good, given said badge gear and the fact there’s always That Guy who manages to get stuff by being walked through things) and pulling crazy dps and basically being nerdy epeen overachievers. It makes me want to start over again on (god forbid) some RP server with a nice leveling guild that has a crapton of alts and everyone’s nice and wants to run old content and people aren’t terribly selfish and actually WANT to do things and shit and not just sit in Dalaran all bored with their leet selves.

I would like to note that I am not bagging on my guild in any way. You are all very nice people (even you, Steady) and I realize I’m just a F&F so I’m just there to be pretty. Maybe when I figure out how to solo ZG I can play with the big kids? :D

Maybe I should actually do some outreaching to people with a similar amount of free time as I have, so we can do as I mentioned earlier. Genius.

Love,
Me

3.1

I’m not sure how much of a fan I am of the latest patch. Yeah, dual-spec is pretty neat, and I hear Ulduar is fun timez, and yeah jousting is pretty neat too.

I went frostfire, though, prior to the patch because of its greater mana efficiency both in and out of groups. I rarely had to drink with that spec, and that was pretty satisfying. Now, though, that is no longer the case. I might as well just go deep fire again for all the good it did. Of course, in fairness, I was never far from deep fire anyway for various reasons.

Also, that jousting thing is a pain the ass. The mounts handle like pigs and keeping your shields up seems to be useless because the name of the game is spam shield-break and charge until the other guy is dead. I dunno. Maybe I was expecting it to be harder and require more strategy? I’m not sure.

I still love Living Bomb, by the way.

Blizzcon!

October 13th, 2008 by spinfar

I went to Blizzcon! I was one of the lucky ducks who got into the raffle and won, so I took off work and went to Anaheim for Fun Timez™. It is possible I played some games while I was there!

WotLK beta – It felt kind of aimless. Like, what can you do with a premade toon in a place you don’t know for 15 minutes. Seriously. I mean, Northrend’s pretty and all, but I didn’t get terribly jazzed playing it. It didn’t help that the mage they gave me was a frost mage. Oh, and death knights? Hilariously OP in some ways.

Starcraft II - I have played exactly one game like this (Warcraft II I think), so I’m not the greatest. The first time I did the multiplayer, I chose the Zerg because they’re hella funny and I’d heard you couldn’t play them yet. However, since I didn’t know what I was doing, I got mostly creamed within 5 minutes by my opponent, who was then kind enough to back off and let me build up things a little bit more while he grew and researched and came back in the last minute and a half and ground my ass into the dirt. He recommended I play Terrans next time, which I did, and I won the tie game I played against someone else! I will admit, I did not do any offensive work, but I did finally figure out how to make a large number of guys fight finally. Oh and hey sensor beacons are hot shit.

Diablo III – ZOMG I’ve never played Diablo before but now I really, really do. They announced the Wizard class in the opening ceremony, but that’s not what I had fun with. No, I had fun with the witch doctor and her flaming voodoo skulls. The interface gave me a lot of problems, and it was so fast-paced I had a hard time seeing what I was picking up and if anything was good for me to wear or what. That being said, I still had a load of fun and I’m really looking forward to when it finally comes out. We even got to finish our game, which took more than the amount of time allowed but hey, we were totally on a roll and finished the level, so, woo.

Meeting people was also really fun. I met some former guildmates and/or raid friends, and it was most fun. The crowds were large, and some of the lines were awful, and WTH asshats who bought four murlocs only to sell them on eBay for a 1000+% markup! (Yes, I got to hear that they would maybe be selling them in limited quantities on their website, but it seemed like it was an iffy thing.) Honestly I just wish I had had a reasonable chance of getting one without having to stand in line on a painful concrete floor for six hours.

Anyway, I had a good time, the costumes were good, and the people were nice and friendly. OH AND HEY if you were watching Direct TV or whatever a bit before the opening ceremonies you might’ve seen me in the background! A WoW friend of mine and I got tapped to be enthusiastic background people and so we did so, only it was so loud that we didn’t realize they were taping until halfway through it, so we probably looked kind of rude and then chagrined because of the poop we were saying.

Oh yeah and we totally learned how to play the miniatures game!

Did… did you go to Blizzcon?

So dang, let’s see.

Exalted – Thunder Bluff, Undercity, Darkspear Trolls, Orgrimmar, Silvermoon City, Tranquillien, Sporeggar, Cenarion Expedition, Shattered Sun Offensive, Scryers, and The Violet Eye.

What I’d like to do is get exalted with as many factions as I can. I wanted to do this before the whole Achievements thing came out, too, I’d like to point out. :p

The ones I’m looking at now are Argent Dawn, Consortium, and the Mag’har. There are a few others I’d like to get, like Timbermaw Hold, but dang dogg that one is a bitch of a grind! Seriously! It’d be easier to get exalted with a PvP faction, practically. Except that’d mean a lot of death. Maybe that’d be good for me, get me over the whole “zomg I might die” thing.

Why am I doing this, you ask? Well, it’s been tricky to get into raids for the last, like, six months, so I figured I’d do something that I could do practically by myself and would give me cutesy rewards like the Mini Sporebat or a larger fake e-peen. Sure, I might not need the Tranquillien exalted cloak, but hey, I’m exalted with Tranquillien. Who cares about the cloak.

Oh, and I’ve also done stuff like pattern grinds. I can make the Robes of Arcana! Now, if only I were a rogue so I could wear the rogue-only mask that drops off the same dudes who drop the aforementioned robes. But then I’d need to be a rogue, so never mind.

So, uhh, what were your least hellish favorite rep grinds? Do you like doing the lowbie quests, or do you prefer to do dungeons and stuff, or do you just go and kill those damn ogres over and over and over again?

OH HAI

So yeah, i r fire mage. I derive all kinds of wrong pleasure from Ignite procs, running through RFC AEing all over the place and watching things just die, and learning that Dragon’s Breath really does have a purpose after all.

In addition to leaving a trail of scorched and blackened husks in my wake, I enjoy long swims up the coast of Kalimdor, ridiculous Old World rep grinds, and Slow Falling my way from Felwood to Darkshore just because I can. My map only really lacks Teldrassil, parts of the draenei islands that aren’t the bits right around the Exodar, and some little bit of Redridge. I let my enemies cut me once before I kill them.

So, hurray! We’ll see what I get around to talking about here. Dang, this is a silly entry. I’m sorry, guys, this will probably be about as popular as a soccer mom posting time-stamped digital pictures of her cats.

Upcoming Expac Changes

October 7th, 2008 by spinfar

So, I hear in Wrath of the Lich King, there are some new talents coming up. Ok, so this is a duhhh, but how else is one to bring up this subject subtly, yanno?

Pretty much the biggest thing I’m looking forward to, and I will admit that I have not been keeping up to date on it or anything, is Living Bomb. I am personally quite terrible at PvP, and this is something that, if effective, would make me not mind so much that I’m a one-shot wonder who gets on really good terms with the spirit healer because we talk so often. I’m fine with dying in this context, don’t get me wrong (though it is frustrating and bad for morale), but I’d rather take someone or five with me, you know?

Now, I’m sure they’ve nerfed this and made it completely different than it was before. Really, so long as it gives me something to just bust out on the odd chance that I actually make it to a cluster of unsuspecting Allies long enough to actually get a damn spell off that isn’t totally instant, I will be happy.

Unless, of course, they can resist it. Fuck that shit, man. I don’t need more effing night elf sons of bitches laughing over my pathetic n00b ass, thank you very much.
